Looking for somewhere to take your dog for a decompression walk? Here’s a list of me and my dogs’ favourite places along with things to consider depending on your dog (if they’re reactive, high prey drive, scavenger or their recall isnt 100% yet)
Please always bring poo bags and keep these walks beautiful by cleaning up after your dog.
Pen Pych/Fairy Pools
This walk has a car park, varied paths either up to the famous Pen Pych waterfall (a bit narrow and has some steep drops) or to the Fairy Pools where your dog can take a dip in the water. Can be busy.
- Narrow paths
- Has some steep drops

Clydach Vale Country Park
This walk has a car park, a lake with ducks, but the best bit for dogs is further along towards the Cambrian Colliery Memorial and past that to a beautiful waterfall and pond.
- Ducks/wildlife
- Lots of other dogs
Hendre’r Mynydd/Windfarm
This walk has a car park, with a walk through the forestry. Then you get to wide gravel paths, where you can go right underneath the wind turbines.
- Wind turbines are a bit scary
- Watch for mountain bikers/motorcyclists (keep your dog on lead if their recall isnt 100%)

Cwmsaerbren/Pixie Bridge
Cross the railway by Treherbert station, forest with tons of different paths, up the mountain along the river or through the woods for a view of Pen Pych. Lots to sniff
- Watch for bikers up the mountain using the bike tracks
- Lots of track maintenance by local group Welcome To Our Woods
Cwmparc Pathway of Hope
A lovely walk over the hills next to a river. There is livestock here so keep your dog on lead when you get to that bit.
- Livestock
- Lots of cow poop 😂
