Back Up = Your dog moves backwards in a straight line on cue.
This is actually a surprisingly useful trick – this is what I use it for with my dogs:
- Come back into heel position if they drift ahead of me
- Move out of my way around the house (extra useful for big dogs)
- Road safety: especially when I’m crossing the road between cars, I can have my dog back up to the pavement while I look both ways, ensuring they don’t pop out onto the road before I’ve checked its safe
It’s also good for their proprioception (body awareness) and fitness.
