How can using a longline go wrong?
- Tangle injuries (line getting wrapped around human or dog’s body and going tight if the dog moves suddenly)
- Friction burn (if your dog runs after something and you grip the line, trying to stop your dog)
Why is it still worth using one?
- Giving your dog freedom if they dont have recall
- Keeping control over your dog while also giving them space to do normal dog stuff (super important for their welfare)
- Stops your dog practicing pulling because they have more lead!

How can we keep us and our dog safe while using a long line?
- ALWAYS attach the line to a well fitting harness, NEVER to your dog’s collar!!
- Practice line handling techniques (watch the free video at the end of this post)
- Use a rubberised line, or wear gloves for better grip and to protect your hands
- Pay attention to surroundings and anticipate what your dog might do
- If your dog is about to run: drop the line and step on it to slow your dog so you dont get friction burn from gripping the line.
Watch me and Quiz demonstrate safe longline handling!
βΎοΈ The figure 8
Better than basic loops: gets tangled less, you can gather a lot more of the line more quickly and easily
πΊ The cha cha slide
Your active hand gently lets the line slide over it as your dog trots ahead, letting the loops out from your passive hand
πΈ Hover the line
Use your active hand to hover the line above your dogs back so it doesn’t tangle their feet. Gather up the line if you need
π The brake (slow stop)
Brace yourself and then GENTLY grip the line in your active hand to slow your dog to a stop
πΆββοΈ Walk down the line
If your dog can’t recall to you and you need to stop them from reaching something (another dog, food on the ground etc), walk your hands down the line til you get to their harness and lure them away with a treat
